I was mostly rearranging things rather than getting rid of them. However, it’s okay that my progress is slower different because minimalism is a very personal journey and there’s plenty of room for differences.Īs expected, it was difficult at first. Minimalism can be a one-off thing, but most of us will probably need to “weed our garden” every once in a while. When we live, we accumulate and outgrow things. Even after a few rounds of decluttering, there are still things I know I should’ve gotten rid of.ĭid you think that minimalists shouldn’t have excess things to get rid of? It will be interesting to see how Paul Collard develops his likeable protagonist and what he gets up to next. Lady Thief Feb-2014 Book - 2 Scarlet’s true identity has been revealed, but her future is uncertain. The historical content is authentic, and the story has a good twist at the end. This is a debut novel, intended as the first in a series. At times it seems as if they incidental to the war itself. The characterisation is good, although I think the main characters could have been fleshed out more. The battle scenes are described in great detail with all the horror we have come to expect of the Crimean War. This is not a long book, and the pace is fast and furious. This is an interesting plot device, although it strains credulity, opening the way for the ‘false’ officer to save the day at the Alma. Soames dies of fever en route and Jack takes over his identity. Thank you to NetGalley and Tilbury House Publishers for providing a digital ARC. But I just can't see this appealing to children. If this were aimed at adults, I might've given it a higher rating. Kids might enjoy looking at the illustrations, but are they really going to want to sit and listen to what is, essentially, a really long free-verse poem? The words are evocative, and I like the way each flowery description of a shade of brown is tied back to the little girl narrating the story. Were I to have viewed it as something aimed at adults, I probably would've liked it better. This is yet another picture book for adults disguised as one for children.
