But eventually, this distinction begins to break down and she is forced to reconcile the two aspects of herself. She repeatedly asserts that she is not Esther she is Kirby. Her relatives rename her Esther and she struggles to deal with her two identities. She is no longer in charge of her life the Faith controls what she can wear, what she can say, and what she should expect out of life. Kirby is forced to adhere to the Faith's rules and has no contact with anyone she knew in her old life. These relatives are members of Children of the Faith, a strict religious cult. ![]() Her mother suddenly and mysteriously has to go away, leaving Kirby with relatives she never even knew existed.
